Yvonne Leung: 2 More Sleeps!
This will be my second time coordinating our Field School to Guatemala and I’m looking forward to sharing this experience with such a diverse group of students. Out of the 16, we have two Business, two Communications, one Music Therapy, one IDEA, one Culture Net, one Global Stewardship and eight Liberal Studies students. It amazes me how the commonality of studying abroad has united such unique individuals. They all come from different educational backgrounds, each with their own academic and personal goals to achieve from this tour. I am certain that they will learn just as much from each other as they will learn about the Guatemalan culture and society.
In just 10 days, out tour will be covering almost 60% of the country! Our itinerary includes Guatemala City, Chichicastenango, Antigua, Tikal, Morales, Estazuela and Livingston. Chi Chi is heaven for a true shopper at heart selling everything from hand carved masks to colorful woven blankets. Hiking the Mayan ruins of Tikal at dawn and sitting on top the highest temple overlooking the Peten jungle is what I’m looking forward to the most. Livingston will be paradise, a small island in the Caribbean only accessible by boat. We end our tour in Guatemala City where we will meet Yolanda Colom and Sylvia Solarzano Foppa, our guest speakers on changes in contemporary Guatemala society concerning women’s roles and rights. Yolanda, sister of the ex president of Guatemala was one of the first female guerilla fighters during the civil war in the 1960s, and Sylvia was one of the leaders of the EGP in the 1970s.
2 more sleeps and we’re off! We will be blogging daily (internet accessibility permitting) so please do follow us as we embark on our 10 journey in Guatemala.
Miss you so much....lots of love
