Tessa, Ruolin & Raven:The Time Travel of Life

Song of the day: Forever Young by Jay Z and Beyoncé

Today we started our busy day by listening to “forever young” by Jay Z and Beyoncé. We chose this song because we feel it is relative to everyone in our group. The song not only creates a positive energy but helps us to acknowledge how wonderful this time period in our life really is.

After meeting in the lobby, we walked through Greenwich royal grounds to the Royal Observatory. The Royal Observatory is over 300 years old. Here we were given an hour to observe and learn about the creation and development of time. Also we got to see the Meridian Line. The Meridian Line is a line that runs directly from the South pole to the North pole, therefore separating the western and Northern hemispheres. It is otherwise known as zero longitude and determines all other lines of longitude.

Following the Royal observatory we made our way to Greenwich University where we visited the Grand Hall and Chapel on campus. The grand hall is a breathtaking dining room with beautifully hand painted ceiling and walls. It is world renowned for being featured in multiple films such as, Pirates of the Caribbean, Thor and many more.

At our time at Greenich University we met Peter Vlachos, who took us on a walking tour of Greenwich and Woolrich. On the tour he highlighted the major contrasts that gentrification has created. For example, there are streets where one side is filled with beautiful new high rises and the other side is crammed with low class bargain markets. We believe this was the most educational part of our busy day because it gave us a harsh visual of the effects that gentrification is having on real people. Peter’s knowledge and passion about the topic was evident and really helped us compare it to similar issues we are facing in Vancouver.

Above is a photo of Peter speaking to the group about gentrification and how “central London is moving East”.
