Karolina Szulc: Time Flies, Money Disappears and New Challenges Arise
Wow. I can’t believe I only have two months left, here, in Orlando. These past four months have flown by with the blink of an eye. Working for one of the most successful companies, Disney, has had its ups and downs. I am fortunate enough, to be able to experience operations at the main park at World Disney World: Magic Kingdom.
I have just rotated my roles within the park from merchandise to operations. This was a brilliant chance for me, as I am the type of a person who likes change and new challenges. In my old role, I was expected to be very nice with guests and believe that they are always right. I have mastered that perception in the course of the three months and the work started becoming somewhat monotonous.
As I got thrown into my new role as parade audience control, I have to be sharp with the guests and not let them push me around. In this role, I tell the guests what they can and cannot do even if they don’t like it. I still try to be the most courageous about it as I can, but there are cases where I just have to step my foot down and use a stronger tone of voice. This change gave me the opportunity to experience both type of behaviors the cast members must deal with in their everyday operations.
Currently, I am enjoy my new position and everyday I come across new challenges such as guest running across the parade route, people pushing through other people or guests (yes, not only the young ones) trying to climb objects such as garbage cans, trees, railings just to see the parade. I have worked many Halloween party nights, where there is a horse running down Main Street in Magic Kingdom and people literally try running across the street for something silly as a box of popcorn. If they want to put their health at risk for that or for a better spot than go ahead… (I am just kidding.. I do my job well and stop them just in time).
Controlling the crowds at a busy place as Magic Kingdom is can be hectic but it has its good times and funny stories that will be memories for the lifetime. Right now, the park is getting ready to start its Christmas Parade. I am excited for it, but also nervous, because I know how crazy busy that time of the year gets. I will just have to wait and enjoy every moment here while it lasts, because this trip is one of the best experiences that I have had in my life so far.
Oh and as for the title, yes if you are planning to come here and save money, don’t count on it (unless you don’t intend on doing or seeing anything). I have visited many places while living here such as Miami, The Florida Keys, St. Augustine, various beaches around the area, Universal Studios, SeaWorld and many more. Moreover, next week, I am going on a cruise to Bahamas since it is very affordable around here. It is an opportunity of a lifetime and I wanted to get the best out of it, while I am here.
So far, I have succeeded. J
